Anyone caring about Category:Deletion requests?

Hello. Since your decision to deprive volunteers of admin rights on this site there's 1,000+ deletion requests stagnated at Category:Deletion requests. Please have a look at those or allow again users to hold administrator rights again for maintenance purposes. Thanks. --MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:14, 12 July 2016 (UTC) (ping to @MZMcBride so he can advice if this is the appropriate place)Reply

Broken redirects

I'm tagging for deletion using a standard pywikibot script ~250 pages for deletion. Sorry for the flood at recent changes. Regards, --MarcoAurelio (talk) 00:07, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Finished. Now someone has to delete those. Regards, --MarcoAurelio (talk) 00:14, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

How to request editor rights

The account policy states that only staff, GS and stewards gain the editor rights? But how can normal users request that? Thingofme (talk) 08:51, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Thingofme: According to Wikimedia:Accounts policy, editor permissions are only given to approved staff or contractors for work-related purposes. Regards, - MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:17, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Does GS hold the editor rights or this wiki separate Global sysops (volunteers) and local sysop (staff) about editing of this wiki? Thingofme (talk) 01:41, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Please change the last line to "Stewards and global sysops have administrator rights on this wiki for the purpose of anti-vandalism and they may not use administrative tools for controversial purposes." Thingofme (talk) 12:25, 25 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Spamming user

Special:Contribs/Kemdanangdactriveda has spammed a certain talk page and their userpage with phone numbers, etc. I tagged one for speedy deletion, but couldn't tag the userpage as abuse filter disallowed me. Someone please fix this. All of their edits to enwiki and commons are already reverted. Thank you. CX Zoom (talk) 12:04, 18 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if anyone even watches this page. So pinging you @GVarnum-WMF as you're an admin and I saw you edit today in Special:RecentChanges. Thanks! CX Zoom (talk) 12:08, 18 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the information globally banned and vandalism I believe cleaned up (thanks to your help). Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 01:27, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! Legal Fees Assistance Program mentions "Checkuser", but it should be changed to "CheckUser" per the page the program links to. Thanks! EpicPupper (talk) 17:38, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Resolution:Licensing policy

Can someone help me? I want to translate this resolution page into Vietnamese. Thanks! Tryvix1509 (talk) 14:16, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

CC @Quiddity (WMF): can you help me? Tryvix1509 (talk) 14:01, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Tryvix1509 - I've asked the people responsible for this site to take a look at your question. Unfortunately, there is not solution that is both easy and good, at this instant.
Context: If I understand correctly, the current system at Resolution:Licensing policy is using the very old (outdated and non-ideal) method of: "manually create a subpage, and add a link for that in the top-navigation-box". That means that the translations can easily get outdated.
Instead, (if I understand correctly) the entire page (and all of the existing translations, and then any new translations) ought to be migrated into the mw:Extension:Translate system (which is used for most documentation pages on Meta-wiki/Mediawiki-wiki/Commons/Wikidata). I am not certain what the best short-term solution is, hence I have asked for the other people to take a look.
I hope that information helps. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 23:57, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Tryvix1509: The Resolution:Licensing policy page is now setup for translation on the local translation system and translations from Meta-Wiki have been imported. Thank you for your help! Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 10:21, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

make translatable first section: "The nonprofit ....human diversity"

@GVarnum-WMF: please add the corresponding tags on page Give_feedback. -- 10:59, 28 February 2023 (UTC) Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 10:59, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Wladek92 - Thank you for your translation efforts! That content is available for translation on the {{Foundation description}} template. Thank you! Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 10:19, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Desktop Website Dark Mode

@SGrabarczuk (WMF): I'm sure this has been asked many times, but I was wondering if Dark Mode for the Wikipedia desktop site is every going to be a thing? I mean Volker E. made a pretty good CSS (can be found here if anyone is interested: WikimediaUI Dark mode) So doesn't have to be anything special like the phone app has all those options (Wikiwand works fine for anyone interested in something like that on the desktop, I rather have a simple toggle on the vanilla site cause I'm a simple guy that likes to go on rants about dark mode on Wikimedia late at night lmao). At least for me a pure black dark mode is fine. I was just wondering, cause my late night Wikipedia "rabbit hole" journeys puts a lot of strain on my eyes and I'm sure I'm not the only one lol. Also, don't really want to log into my account all the time if I ever go on other computers (mostly on public computers or work computers) or incognito on the browser to use the CSS. Sorry for the long rant lol. So yeah, was just wondering if it's going to ever happen? Hurtcopain (talk) 07:10, 22 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Most likely, YES, @Hurtcopain. I'm glad that I can say this is part of our annual plan for the year starting in July :) Unless this changes, which is highly unlikely, we'll be working on dark mode in the next months.
As a fun fact - there are at least two challenging parts. First of all, we haven't been able to offer preferences to logged-out users. We're solving this now. Secondly, dark mode will not look good if different pieces of code (like templates and other CSS written by the communities on each wiki locally) aren't adjusted to it. So it will require lots of work, not only for the Foundation.

And thanks for your question! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 12:14, 22 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly! That sounds great and I can't wait to see the feature soon. I understand the hurdles it takes to come out with new features, but I just want to thank you and the whole wiki team and community for what they do for not only me but the whole internet. Keep it up! Hurtcopain (talk) 05:51, 24 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

shown 3 edit requests but listed none

On page -> https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia:Scope , what is the meaning of 3 in the Maintenance infobox since there are no element in the list page ? May be title to improve.

Edit requests (3)

-- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 07:43, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Wladek92: That relates to the number of edit requests currently in queue. I am open to suggestions on alternative (but not too long) wording. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:27, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
so where are the 3 ones since the queue is empty when i open the link ? Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 06:12, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Wladek92: I am not sure what you mean. I see two pages in that category (aka the queue) - one (the template) is excluded from the count, and one is one hold (but still in the queue). That matches the (1) that I now see in that navbox. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:42, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Delete Policy:Terms of Use/es-formal

Policy:Terms of Use offers an untranslated español (formal) version. This is unneeded and useless. It seems to have appeared from the creation of Policy:Terms of Use/es-formal in what seems a mistake edit by a newbie.

TranslatablePage::getTranslationPages() figures out the list of languages from the subpages that exist. (thanks @bd808 for the link)

There's also a second translation (Policy:Terms of Use/sh-cyrl) listed as "0% translated" as well, which should probably be equally deleted. Seems created by a spammer, which was reverted by Tropicalkitty, but the page kept on, edited by FuzzyBot and other non-translated edits.

Wikimedia wiki mobile redirect

Hi, this wiki does not automatically redirect mobile users to the mobile domain, like Wikimedia projects actually do. For example, clicking on "Terms of Use" on Wikipedia in mobile mode goes to this wiki in desktop mode, wich is not very nice. Please fix. CyberOne25 (talk) 19:53, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello @CyberOne25, I have reported this on Phabricator where hopefully it can be investigated further and resolved. Thank you for reporting it. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:41, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Can this site be classified as semi-fishbowl

As unregistered users cannot edit or translate anything and registered users only have ablity to edit talk pages and user pages, and translating content, also creating an account is disabled. Can this wiki be considered "semi-fishbowl"? ToadetteEdit (talk) 20:03, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@ToadetteEdit: Can you elaborate? Considered for what purpose and where? --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 03:28, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Request for translation administrator rights

Hi, I have been cleaning up some vandalism in my capacity as a global sysop. Since I am not a translation admin here, I am not able to delete translated pages (like Agenda:2016-04-22/bm, not a translation). Therefore I request translation administrator rights according to the Wikimedia:Accounts policy. Thanks, --Ameisenigel (talk) 09:11, 3 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ameisenigel: Thank you for your help! I have gone ahead and setup these rights. Thank you again! --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 22:20, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

LincolnBot broke Template:Decade years navbox

In Special:Diff/361758 LincolnBot changed the "cat_prefix" parameter to "cat prefix" in Template:Decade years navbox. Note "cat_suffix" was not changed. By changing the parameter, Template:DMCA category by year (which uses the "cat_prefix" parameter) no longer links to the correct categories. For example, as of 27 March 2024 if you go to Category:DMCA 2023 you'll see that in the DMCA category by year nav box that "2022" no longer links to Category:DMCA 2022, it instead is linking to Category:2022. This is because the template Template:Decade years navbox is no longer recognizing the prefix passed in by Template:DMCA category by year. —RP88 (talk) 19:25, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@RP88: This has been fixed - apologies for the error - and thank you for the alert! --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 19:49, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Module:No globals

If I read the en.wikipedia TfD discussion correctly, the function of this module has replaced by strict library of Scribunto extension, and as it has no linked-in pages, do we really need a reason to keep it? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:34, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

All set - I have gone ahead and deleted that page. Thank you, @Liuxinyu970226, for the ping! --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:02, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Add autopatrol to editor user group

I would like to propose to add the autopatrol user right to the editor user group because I think we do not need to patrol edits from approved staff accounts. @GVarnum-WMF: --Ameisenigel (talk) 11:03, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

That is a reasonable idea. Curious what @Martin Urbanec (WMF) thinks - but I think it is worth considering and doing if technically reasonable/possible. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 17:21, 21 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ameisenigel I think that makes a lot of sense! After a discussion among the Core Administrators team, I went ahead and implemented the change. Martin Urbanec (WMF) (talk) 13:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
That was quick! Thanks, --Ameisenigel (talk) 16:32, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

requested translator admin to complete the preparation work on Wikimedia:Translations_guidelines

Translated pages of Wikimedia:Translations_guidelines show several untranslated sections still in EN although stats indicate 100% as translated. Please admintrans work is required here to complete the messages. Thanks -- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 14:36, 27 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the pointer. These issues are reduced (but not entirely solved). One template was fixed, and it's now possible to translate the transcluded content from Wikimedia:Duplicated content (but the incomplete translations won't show up in the "100% completed" main page's stats, however the section does link directly to it so hopefully that's clear enough!).
