archives access in Read Only mode
Wouldn't it be easier to declare the archives acces in Read Only mode ? -- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 05:59, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Wladek92 - generally the archives for talk pages remain within the talk pages namespace - which is intentionally not in read-only mode on this wiki - so that would be a technically inaccurate statement to make. Do you have a suggestion on alternative wording? --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- you say the whole namespace, but why the page protection -> https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Protecting_and_unprotecting_pages cannot apply on a per page basis in this wiki ? -- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 06:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Wladek92: Given the ability to do that is limited to a smaller subset of editors on this wiki (admins) - I am not sure it would be "easier" for all future editors. I am not sure giving all editors those rights or preventing all non-admin editors from being able to archive talk pages is ultimately easier or better solution.
- However, I can appreciate the thinking of making it an additional step for sysops to then take if you are thinking easier form the "end-user" perspective. But I am not sure that would be "easier" from the wiki maintenance perspective and still would require placement of a template. Open to your thoughts and apologies for delayed response. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 19:53, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
